Mobile Communication

What is Meshtastic?

Meshtastic is an open-source project that lets you use affordable mesh radios to communicate off-grid. Messages are relayed between devices in a mesh network, so the more devices in range, the stronger and farther your network reaches. No cell towers or internet required.

What is MeshCore?

MeshCore is an alternative open-source firmware for mesh radio hardware, with different features and performance characteristics compared to Meshtastic. All Exere devices support both platforms, so you can choose whichever fits your needs.

Do you design your own radio boards?

No. We build on proven, off-the-shelf mesh hardware rather than reinventing the radio. What we do build ourselves is the rugged, water-resistant housing around it, and our proprietary compression layer that fits more into every packet than stock Meshtastic or MeshCore firmware alone.

How far can Exere radios communicate?

Range depends on terrain, antenna choice, and obstructions. In open terrain with a clear line of sight, expect several miles with the 5dBi antenna. In urban or forested environments, range will be shorter. A Basestation at an elevated position can significantly extend your network's reach.

Do I need a license to use these radios?

Exere devices operate on license-free ISM bands (915 MHz in the US). No amateur radio license is required for standard use.

What's the difference between the Ityr, Ityr V, and Basestation?

The Ityr is a handheld portable radio for personal use in the field. The Ityr V is built for permanent or semi-permanent vehicle installation. The Basestation is a fixed unit that anchors your mesh network from a stationary location like a home, camp, or command post.

Are Exere radios water-resistant?

Yes, all Exere devices are built with water-resistant housing. We're currently working toward a formal IP rating; until then, we recommend avoiding full submersion.

Can I use Exere radios internationally?

Mesh radio regulations vary by country. The 915 MHz band used by Exere devices is approved in the US, Canada, Australia, and several other regions. Check your local regulations before operating outside the US.

Is the Ityr or Ityr V available now?

The Ityr and Ityr V are both live products that ship from Virginia. The Basestation is still in development. Sign up for our newsletter to be notified when it launches.

Onsite Networking

What is Onsite Networking?

Onsite Networking is our on-site infrastructure service. We install and configure a TrueNAS server and OPNsense firewall at your home or business, and teach you how to run both yourself. Same self-sufficiency philosophy behind our mesh radios, applied to your files and network.

Is this available for businesses, or just homes?

Both. We work with homeowners and small businesses alike; the underlying setup (a TrueNAS server, an OPNsense firewall, VLANs to separate users or devices) applies to either. Tell us what you're working with and we'll scope it accordingly.

Where is Onsite Networking available?

We currently offer these services in the Northern Virginia area. If you're outside that area, reach out anyway; we may still be able to help.

How much does it cost?

Pricing depends on your storage needs, network complexity, and how much hands-on training you want. Visit our Onsite Networking page and fill out the form to tell us about your setup, and we'll follow up with a plan and quote.

Do I need to know anything about networking already?

No. Every install includes a hands-on walkthrough and a written reference guide for your specific setup, so you're not left with a system you don't understand.
